Do you use your Dining Room often? I didn't think so. I have been seeing a trend with our projects. Dining Rooms are morphing into libraries, laundry rooms, mud rooms, offices, bedrooms and pantries. At first it seems crazy - but when owners are faced with the need for more space that will be used daily, it is a no-brainer to use space that already exists. This avoids the need for an addition.
Our clients wanted more space to prep and cook food for their growing family. They also wanted their kitchen to have a more updated and modern look. Instead of moving a wall or adding on to make the Kitchen larger, we decided to make the Dining Room the hero of this story.
How does a room become a hero? It does what you need it to do, for less money and looks great doing it. In this case, it supplied the needed extra prep and cooking space for our clients.
We were able to get a lot of storage and function in this space to make it easier to host large groups of people.
Additional work space and storage is on the opposite wall. The table was custom made by our trim carpenter. Wood floors were laced in to the existing ones in the Kitchen and Entry. All of the floors were refinished to match throughout the Main Level.
You might be thinking, What about the Kitchen?! Here she is. Not bad, but not modern. We made a few changes to the appliance locations to allow for a better flow and insulated the exterior wall to fix the issue of cold weather freezing the dishwasher lines. The good news: cabinets and counters were sold to be a part of someone else's kitchen.
The clean lines of the cabinets, hardware, quartz backsplash all contribute to the modern feel of this space. The wood tones keep it feeling warm. The door leads to the Pantry beyond.
The island featuring the tile front provides seating on the back side that faces the Family Room. There is enough clearance behind it to allow for the cook(s) to continue to work while people are seated at the island.
The range can now be featured since the refrigerator has been relocated to the left of the sink. This allows the activity zones of food prep and cooking to be more spread out to allow for additional cooks in the Kitchen.
Taking the quartz up the wall to match the hood elevation creates a clean modern look that is easy to clean. The window sill will be a great home for plants.
The "wood look" tile pulls out the brown tones in the darker quartz. (see below)
The texture in the tile adds interest to the design. It also is more durable than actual wood, it will hold up well in the high traffic area between the Kitchen and the Family Room.
The Dining Room was important to the original owners, but times change and families now function differently. There is not as much formal dining happening as there used to be.
